Shipping Corporation of India – The Maritime Training Institute

The Maritime Training Institute is a vital segment of Shipping Corporation of India. SCI- The largest shipping company of India established the SCI Maritime Training Institute in the year 1988 to understand and meet the training and re-training needs of its shore and fleet staff. Extending the maritime training services to the external participants the company contributes to the government of India vision of transforming the country to become an advanced seafaring nation. 

Over the years SCI – MTI has designed a wide range of courses contributing to the Indian maritime industry. The training institute ensures innovative and value added courses on safety and commercial aspects fulfilling the requirements of SCI and other reputed maritime companies. It also offers crash course on shipping management for overseas clients. 

Campus at a Glance

Shipping Corporation of India established it’s Maritime Training Institute on a 45 acres of land at the shores of Powai lake. During the initial years of establishment, SCI turned out to be the solitary reaper in Powai, which was jungle abound with hillocks, wild life and thick green cover. Adapting to the changing environment, MTI transformed itself by being easily accessible with its bus stand for public transport and its free bus service to participants every day from Andheri and Ghatkopar railway station. Expanding its footprints in Maritime education and training, SCI MTI has become the first Wi-Fi enabled Green Campus in Maritime Education Industry. MTI utilizes the natural waste to create manure and lake water for gardening across the campus.

1.     Campus Infrastructure:

The green Campus of SCI across the Maritime Training Institute provides highly stimulating and learning environment. The pond and lake amplify the beauty of the campus. This environmental friendly and self – sustainable campus has compost pits to prepare manure which is used in garden area of campus.  To concentrate on renewable source of energy, MTI established its solar plant in January 2017, expanding its capacity to 0.5MW.

2.     Academic Infrastructure:

SCI – MTI delivers the best-in-class academic infrastructure with air conditioned spacious classrooms, library with 7000+ books, auditorium where 200 attendees can be accommodated at the same time and a computer lab with equipped connections. The training institute delivers more lively and interactive learning experience offering well equipped classrooms with computers, projectors, smart boards, white boards and audio-visual facilities. A wide range of international and government seminars and conferences are held in the state-of-art conference room and seminar room of MTI.

3.     Training Infrastructure: 

SCI-MTI delivers advanced facilities for Maritime Education and training by conducting workshops (Seamanship, Hydraulic Pneumatic, Welding, Fitting, Carpentry, Plumbing, Physics, Chemistry and computer). MTI with its modern equipment and simulators, laboratories delivers an exuberant learning experience.

4.     Residential Infrastructure: 

SCI- MTI has setup four hostels to accommodate its course participants with a residential capacity of 240. It offers both air conditioned and non-air conditioned hostel rooms at an economical cost. It also has a dining block which allows 120 participants to dine at a time. In addition, 1BHK, 2BHK, 3BHK quarters are available in the campus for the junior and senior officers and faculty. 

5.     Sports Infrastructure:

SCI-MTI focusses on the holistic development of its cadets. Regular yoga sessions are conducted every week under the supervision of a yoga instructor. It also offers indoor and outdoor sports facilities like chess, carrom, badminton, volleyball, cricket, football and many other games. SCI-MTI also offers large size playground for outdoor sports like volleyball and badminton.

6.     Campus Conveniences:

Located in the prime area of Mumbai, SCI-MTI becomes easily accessible with private and public transport. It also ensures free bus service to its participants from Andheri and Ghatkopar railway station. In addition, the campus car is available 24X7 for emergency service. It also ensures adequate medical dispensary and doctor is available in the campus for any medical emergency during daytime.  It also has ATM facility and a free Wi-fi for research and education purpose
